The health and safety of our Gettysburg community of guests, staff and volunteers is our priority.

While we are taking extra precautions to help keep you safe, exposure to COVID-19 is an inherent risk in any public location where people are present. We cannot guarantee you will not be exposed during your visit.

Safety & Prohibited
Items Policy

For the safety of all guests, staff and volunteers, as well as the preservation of this historic property and artifacts, please observe the following when entering the Museum & Visitor Center facility and grounds.

In addition, COVID-related safety protocols are currently in effect.

  1. All bags are subject to inspection.
  2. Approved bags:
    Bags require thorough bag inspections.
    Visitors refusing bag inspection will be denied entrance into the building.
    • Bags with medically necessary items
    • Diaper bags
    • Camera bags
    • String bags
    • Backpack purses
  3. Prohibited bags (bags prohibited inside the Museum & Visitor Center building):
    • Cooler bags
    • Luggage
    • Bags with wheels
    • Backpacks not on the approved list
  4. Items prohibited from Gettysburg Foundation property include the following:
    • Weapons/firearms, except qualified law enforcement and excluding antique or reproduction/replica weapons. Antique or reproduction weapons will be subject to a Black Powder and Saber inspection.
    • Knives/blades longer than 3.5 inches
    • Clubs, hammers, martial arts devices and related items
    • Flammable liquids and gases greater than 0.5 oz
    • Fireworks, ammunitions, explosive devices and related materials
    • Paint and related marking materials, spray cans and other aerosols
    • Other items deemed dangerous, suspicious or inappropriate by staff
  5. Prohibited activities in the Museum & Visitor Center and on the grounds:
    • Recreational activities, such as ball playing, kite flying, skateboarding and inline skating. Equipment related to these and other sporting/recreational activities is prohibited.

Superintendent's Compendium: Visit the National Park Service site and the Superintendent’s Compendium for a summary of park specific rules implemented under 36 Code of Federal Regulations (36 CFR). The Superintendent’s Compendium serves as public notice, identifies areas closed for public use, provides a list of activities requiring either a special use permit or reservation, and elaborates on public use and resource protection regulations pertaining specifically to the administration of the park.
