Gettysburg National Military Park to Present Winter Reading Adventures and Time Travelers' Club

Dec 12, 2024

Gettysburg National Military Park will start the new year with events for families and young learners. Our History Kids Reading Adventure Club (ages 4 to 10) and our Time Travelers Reading Adventures Club (ages 7 to 12) offer families with younger children an opportunity to travel back in time to learn about different figures and topics of our shared past.

The 2025 Winter Reading Adventures theme is ‘National Parks and the Arts’ with a new children's book featured each week and pages projected on the big screen. Subjects and time period will range from Paul Revere’s Ride and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to Ansel Adams and Yosemite National Park. Each program will explore a unique artform and discover a special National Park Service site. Short activities or family adventure instructions will follow each book. All programs are free of charge and take place in the theater at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center. This program series is recommended for families with children ages 4 to 10.

Join the History Kids Reading Adventures Club every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. from Jan. 4 through Feb. 22, 2025.

“Our Winter Reading Adventures program is for kids who are learning to read or love to read and want to spend part of their Saturday’s time traveling back and forth between all eras of our history—from the 18th century right up to last Friday," explained Education Ranger John Hoptak.

Abe Lincoln at Last (Magic Treehouse Series) by Mary Pope Osborne, and Alfred Waud Goes to Gettysburg (a graphic novel) by Ellen T. Crenshaw will be featured in the 2025 Time Travelers' Reading Adventures Club series.

Young readers, writers and adventurers (ages 7 to 12) are encouraged to attend these special programs where we will read and discuss two featured books. Guests can participate in a digital scavenger hunt about Abraham Lincoln and sketch in the footsteps of Civil War sketch artist Alfred Waud, among other adventures. Join us to explore two great books for young readers through read-alouds and engaging activities.

Join the Time Travelers’ Reading Adventures Club on Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15 and 22, at 11 a.m.
