Gettysburg Foundation Gifts ‘Forever Funds’ to Fellow Nonprofit Organization
Dec 16, 2024
On Nov. 7, 2024, residents of Adams County, Pennsylvania, banded together to support their community and the causes they love. The power of their actions is now clear. On Dec. 13, 2024, the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) announced the proceeds raised in the 2024 Giving Spree. Through the incredible generosity of members of our community, more than $3.6 million was raised in a single day for 115 participating nonprofits, including many organizations working to preserve and share the remarkable history of Adams County.
For the fourth year running, the Gettysburg Foundation raised money through the Giving Spree in support of Children of Gettysburg 1863®, the centerpiece of the Foundation’s educational mission for young visitors, students and residents of Adams County. Located at 451 Baltimore Street in downtown Gettysburg, the interactive museum uses hands-on history and imaginative play to introduce children and youth to an important chapter of the story of America and ignite an interest in history at a young age. Through the generosity of our Giving Spree donors, more than $6,100 will be dedicated to expanding the offerings at Children of Gettysburg 1863® in an innovate way. Developed by teachers and museum staff, a new exhibit centered around garments children wore in 1863 will soon be available to experience at the children’s history museum, complete with period correct attire for young visitors to don for their adventure through time.

The Gettysburg Foundation is grateful for all of its Friends and donors who supported its educational mission in the 2024 Giving Spree and is thankful to the Adams County Community Foundation for fostering county-wide support of nonprofit organizations.

For the first time in the history of the Giving Spree, the Gettysburg Foundation is pleased to announce its gift to a fellow Giving Spree participating nonprofit organization, The Lincoln Cemetery. In appreciation of the Lincoln Cemetery Project Association (LCPA) for their important work to preserve The Lincoln Cemetery and to support their efforts in sharing a vital piece of Adams County’s history, the Gettysburg Foundation has gifted the LCPA $8,000 in “Forever Funds” in the 2024 Giving Spree for the ongoing preservation of the cemetery.

The Lincoln Cemetery at Gettysburg is the final resting place of more than 450 African American community members dating back to 1867. Since 1999, the LCPA led by Jean Howard Green has been caring for the cemetery and working tirelessly to honor the unknown interred in this important hallowed ground of Gettysburg.
The preservation and education mission of the Gettysburg Foundation is shared by countless preservationists, historians and organizations across the country and here in Adams County. Through the Foundation’s dedicated support of like causes in the Gettysburg and Adams County community, we will further elevate the lessons and impact of the stories and history of the Battle of Gettysburg to new heights where they are accessible to the next generations of communities across the nation and around the world.
