At its September meeting, the Gettysburg Foundation Board of Directors welcomed one new member and approved the appointment of its new vice-chair.

David J. Sorkin joined the Foundation’s Board of Directors for an initial two-year term.

Sorkin is Co-Director of the Harvard Transactional Law Workshop and a Visiting Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School. From 2007 through 2023, he was General Counsel and then Chief Legal Officer of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., a global investment firm that offers alternative asset management, as well as capital markets and insurance solutions. Prior to joining Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., he was a partner at firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, an international law firm headquartered in New York City.

He serves as President of the Board of Directors of New Alternatives for Children, Inc., a New York City non-profit healthcare and social services agency that works exclusively with children with complex medical needs and their families. He also serves on the Board of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Sorkin earned his bachelor's degree in history at Williams College and holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. He is married to Amy Davidson Sorkin, and they have three adult children.

The Board also named Gene Barr as its new vice-chair. Barr has long been associated with the Foundation and joined its Board of Directors in June 2024. He is the retired president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, 2011-2022. He has more than 45 years of experience in government affairs, public policy and business operations including work with BP America, Associated Petroleum Industries of PA, Triad Strategies and the Harrisburg law firm of McNees Wallace & Nurick. Barr now serves as a Senior Advisor to GSL Public Strategies. He is also on the faculty for the Gettysburg Foundation’s Higher Ground Leadership at Gettysburg programming.

“We are delighted to welcome David and are grateful for Gene’s expanded role,” said A. J. Kazimi, chair of the Gettysburg Foundation. “These two distinguished individuals will enhance our efforts as we pursue our preservation and education mission in support for the National Park Service and one of America’s most important historical landmarks.”

The Gettysburg Foundation is the official non-profit partner of Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site.
