Gettysburg National Military Park will start the new year with events for families with special learners. These special events include the following programs:
“Lincoln at Gettysburg” for the Hearing-Impaired
Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, 9 until 11 a.m.
Program begins at the David Wills House museum, 8 Lincoln Square, Gettysburg, PA 17325
Youth and families can explore President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg journey and speech with park rangers and American Sign Language interpreters. The program includes interactive tours of the David Wills House museum and the Gettysburg National Cemetery, and will conclude with a recitation of the Gettysburg Address in American Sign Language.
"Life of a Civil War Soldier” for the Visually-Impaired
Saturday, Jan. 21, 9 until 11 a.m.
Program begins in the Ford Education Center, Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center, 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA 17325
Youth and families can explore the material environment and sounds of a typical Civil War soldier camp through bugle calls and other music, hands-on history stations and a visit to a battlefield farm used as a general’s headquarters and field hospital. Sensory keepsake bags will transport the learning and inspiration back home.
These events are free of charge. Pre-registration is required to attend by emailing the National Park Service at Gettysburg's education team at gett_education@nps.gov.
Participants are invited to attend the free Saturday morning Reading Adventures programs at 11 a.m. in the theater at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center.
