This GivingTuesday, the Gettysburg Foundation will strive to support Gettysburg National Military Park’s educational outreach and help educators and classrooms nationwide have the opportunity to receive educational resources related to the Battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War.

Created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good, GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement. Since then, it has grown into a year-round movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. GivingTuesday is observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving each year. GivingTuesday 2022 falls on Nov. 29.
This year, the Gettysburg Foundation will focus on Gettysburg National Military Park’s Traveling Trunks Program for its annual GivingTuesday fundraising campaign. All funds raised during this initiative will go toward shipping the trunks to and from classrooms, purchasing replacement materials and outfitting new trunks to help reach more students with hands-on history education. This GivingTuesday, the Gettysburg Foundation is asking for your help with our efforts to help continue and grow Gettysburg’s Traveling Trunks Program so that more classrooms can participate in utilizing this valuable educational resource.

For the past 20 years, Gettysburg National Military Park has provided classrooms with valuable educational resources through the Traveling Trunks Program. The theme of the trunks, “A Nation at War,” includes lessons, stations and activities for students to see what it was like to wear the soldiers’ uniform, to discover stories of women who played a significant role in the Civil War, and to learn about the importance of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Gettysburg National Military Park provides educators, no matter where they are located, the opportunity to establish a creative, hands-on learning environment for their students with the lessons, historical information, materials and activities in the Traveling Trunks.
“As stewards of education in partnership with the National Park Service at Gettysburg, we hope students in classrooms across the country, near and far, who are unable to travel to Gettysburg on a school field trip, will have the opportunity to learn the lessons of Gettysburg beyond the classroom,” said Gettysburg Foundation president and CEO Wayne E. Motts. “By funding the Traveling Trunks program, we will be able to grow this educational resource for more classrooms to enjoy learning about our nation’s history through hands-on learning activities related to Gettysburg and the American Civil War,” added Motts.
The Gettysburg Foundation is on a mission to raise $25,000 this GivingTuesday. Every donation received will go towards shipping, updating, creating and growing Gettysburg National Military Park’s Traveling Trunks Program.

“We hope you will join our efforts to grow the Traveling Trunks Program for classrooms to discover the story of this significant place and the importance of Gettysburg in American history, fostering critical thinking and a memorable experience for students to want to learn more and visit Gettysburg with their families. We are thankful for the support of our efforts and the generosity of our community, area residents, Friends of Gettysburg members and visitors to Gettysburg,” added Motts.

The Gettysburg Foundation invites you to join our efforts to support the education mission of our partner Gettysburg National Military Park and the Traveling Trunks program. The Foundation encourages you to come together this GivingTuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, to help travel the trunks to classrooms across the United States. With your generosity, we will be able to provide these Traveling Trunks of materials related to the Battle of Gettysburg and the American Civil War for classrooms to learn about this significant time in American history for school years to come.
