Battle of Gettysburg Anniversary Lecture Series, July 1-3

Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation invite visitors to Gettysburg during the 158th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 2021, for a new Gettysburg Anniversary Lecture Series. Co-sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg Foundation, the Gettysburg Anniversary Lecture Series evening programs will be hosted in the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center,  8-9 p.m., Thursday, July 1 through Saturday, July 3, 2021. Doors will open each evening at 7 p.m.

These special evening programs are being offered in addition to the Battle Anniversary programming of walks, talks and hikes offered by Gettysburg National Military Park July 1-3 during the days.

Visitors have the opportunity to obtain tickets to join Park Rangers, Licensed Battlefield Guides and historians for hour-long presentations, offering unique perspectives on the events of 158 years ago. The Gettysburg Anniversary Lecture Series offers the following program schedule and topics:

The Wheatfield, featuring acclaimed stage and screen actor Stephen Lang
A story of sacrifice, courage and selflessness, Lang’s performance of The Wheatfield tells of Union Soldier and Medal of Honor awardee, James Jackson Purman, as he vividly recalls the Battle of Gettysburg and his fateful encounters with friends and foe. Returning to Gettysburg 50 years after the battle, Purman and other battle-weary Civil War veterans gather in harmony, stripping away their former allegiances to north and south in hopes of peaceful fellowship. The evening will also feature the premiere recitation of some of Lang’s new work.

Culp’s Hill Rediscovered: Battle, Memory and Rehabilitation on Gettysburg’s Forgotten Hill
In the winter and spring of 2021, Gettysburg National Military Park, with the generous support of the Gettysburg Foundation, began the rehabilitation of 18 acres of historic woods on Culp’s Hill, bringing renewed interest to the site of Gettysburg’s most sustained combat. Join NPS Ranger Troy Harman, NPS Archeologists Erik Kreusch and Tara Noel, along with historians Sue Boardman and Charlie Fennell, for a lively discussion of the history and rehabilitation of this singular spot on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

Shot and Shell: The US Regular Army Artillery During Pickett’s Charge July 3, 1863
While relatively small during the Battle of Gettysburg, the soldiers and officers of the United States Regular Army nonetheless fought all three days for the Union cause at Gettysburg. During Pickett’s Charge on July 3, 1863, at least nine regular army artillery batteries took part in the cannonade, attack and/or repulse of Longstreet’s Assault. Join historian, author and Gettysburg Foundation president and CEO Wayne Motts as he explores the role and stories of the officers and men of the US Regular Army Artillery on July 3, 1863.


FREE public tickets are required for each evening and seating is very limited. Tickets will be offered singly for each evening program online on a first come, first serve basis with a limit of four tickets per transaction. Tickets will be made available online based on the following schedule:
