The Gettysburg Foundation will host a special evening program on Civil War medicine Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at 6 p.m. in the historic barn at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital. Retired Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon Rick Schroeder and retired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Fran Feyock will present Combat Trauma Surgery: Injuries, Methods & Outcomes. SOLD OUT
Combat Trauma Surgery offers guests the opportunity to explore Civil War era trauma surgery with an in-depth review of the methods and outcomes specific to the injuries sustained in battle. Retired medical professionals and Licensed Battlefield Guides Schroeder and Feyock will present a modern-day surgical case review of several of the wounded soldiers from Ron Kirkwood’s book, Too Much for Human Endurance: The George Spangler Farm Hospitals and the Battle of Gettysburg.
Written by noted journalist and author Ronald D. Kirkwood, Too Much for Human Endurance introduces readers to stories of the Spanglers, their farm, those who labored to save lives and those who suffered and died there. Through firsthand accounts and stories rarely told about the wounded, dying, nurses, surgeons, ambulance workers, musicians and others, as well as the strategic importance of the Spangler property and its key role in the Union victory, these experiences are weaved into the history of the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital.
“Rick and Fran’s presentation is a unique opportunity to gain insights into Civil War era medicine from modern-day medical professionals,” said Paul Semanek, Spangler Farm Site Coordinator. “We are pleased to offer guests the opportunity to not only get a glimpse of the wounded soldiers Ron Kirkwood has written about in Too Much for Human Endurance, but also learn more about the treatment these men received right here at the George Spangler Farm in 1863,” added Semanek.
The special program lasts approximately 90 minutes and is limited to 40 attendees. The single general admission ticket price is $20. Friends of Gettysburg receive a $5 discount. Ticket holders for this program may drive directly to the property and park on-site. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for ticket holders to explore original buildings from the battle and the grounds of the 80-acre historic site. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. SOLD OUT
