Military Staff Rides

Military Staff Rides

Since its establishment in 1895, Gettysburg National Military Park has served as an open-air classroom for the education of officers in the U.S. Army and National Guard. Beginning in the early 20th century, cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and officers attending the newly established Army War College (then in Washington, DC) came to Gettysburg on staff rides to understand and analyze timeless aspects of military leadership and decision-making in high-risk situations.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower first visited Gettysburg as a West Point cadet. The General and 34th U.S. President’s farm is now part of the Eisenhower National Historic Site. Years later, Eisenhower continued to share Gettysburg’s lessons with such foreign political and military dignitaries as Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.

Today, military groups from all the U.S. armed forces—and even international military groups—come to learn at Gettysburg.

For Soldiers,
By Soldiers

You and your unit have the unique opportunity to explore the Gettysburg battlefield where generals, captains and enlisted soldiers contributed to the pivotal decisions made here on this hallowed ground.

Our team of experienced staff ride facilitators, former military officers or military school faculty—will help your unit learn or refresh analytical skills.

You will consider leadership attributes and competencies, think about the principles of war and reflect on the values of your service by studying real-life scenarios on the same ground where commanders from both armies made key decisions in the heat of battle. Explore the decisions they made and the reasons behind the courses of action they chose and the options they rejected.

Gettysburg’s history will help you dig deeper into your mindset as a modern military professional even after you return to your duty station.

Active-duty, Reserve Component and National Guard groups, and seminar groups from professional military education institutions, as well as ROTC and JROTC units are welcome and encouraged to explore Gettysburg with us.

Our programs are designed for enlisted personnel, cadets, junior officers and senior officers. We offer a variety of customizable staff rides focused on key lessons from the battlefield. You can create your own ultimate staff ride experience by including lunch on the battlefield, visiting rarely seen sites and even camping under the stars on the grounds of a historic field hospital.

At the Completion of Your Battlefield Experience

Completing your program on-site offers the option to reward your unit for its effort and progress with optional activities, such as a reception at a historic site or a tour of the Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War to conclude your program.

“The leadership you provided throughout the visit to Gettysburg was outstanding. You really tied the events of that period in history to the leadership challenges we face every day. I can’t say I have ever participated in such a quality and meaningful training.”-
