The World of the Civil War Soldier


Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War in the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center

Artifacts, documents and works of art from the collections of Gettysburg National Military Park and the Civil War Museum of Philadelphia, offer a window into the lives, experiences and memories of those who struggled, suffered and survived a century and a half ago.

The new exhibit includes some artifacts never-before-seen on display.

Join us on the Cyclorama platform for an exclusive after-hours, close-up look at the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting.

Enjoy additional time on the viewing platform to observe in full light the remarkable, close-up details and distant battle scenes of the painting. Journey under the diorama to see how the illusion comes to life. There will be time for a question and answer session.

Living historian Eileen Hoover presents Courtyard Stories: The Children of Gettysburg, 1863.

Hear first-hand accounts of some of the children of Gettysburg in 1863. You will learn more about Tillie Pierce, Albertus McCreary, Anna Garlach, Julia and Henry Jacobs, and Jennie Wade.

Courtyard Stories are free and open to the public.

Tickets are required for the children's history museum adventure. Children/Youth (ages 0-12) free with purchase of an adult (ages 13+) ticket.

Storytime for all ages | Books for grades K-1

Join us for a relaxing storytime in your pajamas around the campfire. Stories will be read and campfire songs will be sung at this outdoor event. Siblings and stuffed animals are welcome to attend.

In the event of inclement weather, storytime will be held inside. The event is free and open to the public.

The children's history museum is open prior to the event. Tickets are free for children/youth ages 0-12 with a ticketed adult.

Children/youth ages 8-12 with mothers/caregivers are invited to experience an in-depth introduction and create historical fiber arts during the summer season.

Historical fiber art creation includes multiple sessions to learn and create your own work of fiber art. Choose sessions in hand quilting, embroidery, beading and sewing fabric dolls.

Space is limited and free registrations are accepted first-come, first-served.

Timed shuttle tickets required

Through Columbus Day weekend, visit Eisenhower National Historic Site for a tour of the Eisenhower home and grounds Thursdays through Mondays,10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Shuttles depart the Gettysburg National Military Park useum & Visitor Center hourly starting at 9:30 a.m. with the last shuttle at 3:30 p.m. Timed shuttle tickets required.

No home tours or shuttle service will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Timed shuttle tickets required Thursdays through Mondays.

Designed for young historians age K-5, the all-new, hands-on history exhibit brings to life the stories of Billy Bayly, Albertus McCreary, Sadie Bushman and other young residents of Gettysburg through first-hand accounts and active adventures. 

Introduce the children in your life to Gettysburg and its significance while supporting a new generation of young learners on an interactive start to a lifetime of learning, inspiration and creativity.

Inspired by the life and career of General and 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Eisenhower Exhibit Spotlight is located in the Museum Lobby at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center.

The introductory exhibit is available for visitors to enjoy at no charge.
