Living History at the George Spangler Farm - Every Weekend Starting June 9

There will be living history groups and historians at the Spangler Farm every weekend during the season.

JUNE 9 - 11- 2nd Corps Field Hospital CSA

2nd Corps Field Hospital CSA will have an encampment for opening weekend depicting a Confederate field hospital.

JUNE 16 - 18- Rex Hovey

A living historian from North Carolina will represent his great, great-uncle, Dr. Bleecker Hovey, who was a surgeon from New York here at the Spangler Farm in July, 1863. A special feature of this presentation is a chance to see Dr. Hovey’s actual surgeon’s kit, still intact, after 154 years.

JUNE 23 - 25- Jon Willen/Jackie Greer

A Union surgeon, a civilian nurse and a hospital steward will discuss Civil War medicine on this weekend. This group does an excellent job in explaining all phases of Civil War medical care.

JUNE 30 - JULY 2 - Maxwell’s Battery - 1st U.S. Battery K and Dr. Annabel

Maxwell’s Battery - 1st U.S. Battery K and Dr. Annabel, a very large living history group, featuring several different types of living historians, will gather at the Spangler Farm for the holiday weekend. Union surgeons, nurses, hospital stewards, civilian aid group members and even an infantry unit to guard the field hospital site, will be on hand to talk and demonstrate all about life at a Union field hospital.

JULY 7 - 9- Frederick Ladies Relief Society

The Frederick Ladies Relief Societies will have the encampment at the Spangler Farm this weekend to tell of the contributions to the war effort made by the United States Sanitary Commission and other relief organizations.

JULY 14 - 16- Jon Willen/Jackie Greer

A Union surgeon, a civilian nurse and a hospital steward will discuss Civil War medicine on this weekend. This group does an excellent job in explaining all phases of Civil War medical care.

JULY 21 - 23- 2nd Corps Field Hospital CSA

2nd Corps Field Hospital CSA will have an encampment depicting a Confederate field hospital.

JULY 28 - 30- 9th PA Reserves

From near Pittsburgh, PA come the 9th PA Reserves Medical Unit to the Spangler Farm. Also with the 9th PA Reserves will be a group from the United States Sanitary Commission.

AUGUST 4 - 6- Women’s Relief Association

A living historian portraying a Civil War nurse will be here to describe and demonstrate the Nurse’s role and duties during the Civil War

AUGUST 4 - 6-Citizens of Gettysburg
