The totals are in! Thanks to your generosity and enthusiasm, we raised $7,959.16 for our #Giving Tuesday project to rehabilitate the historic fruit orchard at the George Spangler Farm--- surpassing our goal of $7,500!
This #GivingTuesday, the Gettysburg Foundation is Seeding the Future to Preserve the Past by raising money to restore the historic orchard at the George Spangler Farm Civil War Field Hospital Site.
During the Battle of Gettysburg, George Spangler watched his property go from a thriving family farm to a harrowing Union field hospital. The same fields he watched his children run through just days before were now strewn with wounded soldiers going through traumatic 19th century medical procedures.
In honor of all who were treated and died at the farm, the Gettysburg Foundation is restoring an apple orchard to the property.
This #GivingTuesday the Foundation will raise funds to plant the trees, re-build historic fence lines, and purchase supplies to restore this fruitful part of history.
The trees will eventually become a part of the Foundation’s Recruit members Seedling to Cider project, which partners with the National Park Service to preserve and maintain the battlefield orchards and uses fruit grown on the trees to make hard cider. Click here to donate.
The Recruits have some exciting events on tap for #Giving Tuesday.
Through Facebook, you can watch Recruits present Gettysburg National Military Park with a check from the proceeds of the 2015-2016 cider sales.
They will also feature an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the George Spangler Farm Civil War Field Hospital Site. Led by Christopher Guinn, Chief of Interpretation & Education at Gettysburg National Military Park, the tour will educate individuals about the Farm’s historic significance as both a Civil War Field Hospital and 19th century civilian farm life. The tour will be broadcasted live on Facebook.
We invite you to join us on this day of giving and awareness by tuning into the tour and donating to rehabilitate this fruitful part of our nation’s history. You can sponsor, preserve, or sustain a tree through various giving levels. Click here to donate.
