Winnie Davis: Daughter of the Confederacy and Last Casualty of the Lost Cause
Lee's talk explores Winnie's role as the Daughter of the Confederacy in contrast to her controversial engagement in 1890 to a Northerner lawyer whose grandfather was a famous abolitionist, and in light of her later career as a writer and novelist in New York City. Only here in the North would Winnie finally find the personal and artistic freedom she sought. But despite her blooming literary career, the young woman would find herself ultimately unable to escape the legacy of the Lost Cause.
