National Standard Alignment

The agenda for the The Richard Bartol, Jr. Conference for Educators is aligned with the National Council for Social Studies Curriculum Standards, with special focus on themes 2, 5, 6 and 10 (Time, Continuity and Change; Individuals, Groups and Institutions; Power, Authority and Governance; Civic Ideals and Practices). Daily Focus Questions, sessions and field trips at the conference will model the Knowledge, Processes and Products elements outlined for the Middle Grades in the NCSS Standards. The conference is designed to help participants achieve maximum success in the classroom. 

In addition to NCSS National Standards, multiple tenants from the following academic standards have been incorporated to enrich the conference program:

  • Common Core Standards for English Language Arts
  • Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies*
  • District of Columbia Learning Standards, Social Studies & Language Arts (Grades 4-8)
  • Maryland State Standards, Social Studies and Language Arts (Grades 4-8)
  • Pennsylvania Academic Standards for History (Historical Analysis, Pennsylvania History, and U.S. History)
  • Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening
  • Keystone Exams: Civics and Government


*The West Virginia Board of Education voted to embed the Common Core Standards into the state’s current Content Standards and Objectives.
